Visual art is an attractive storytelling form because it can at once contain a clear story and yet be completely up to the interpretation of the viewer. I think of my artwork as a storytelling tool, a tool designed to evoke a story from the imagination of the viewer. My intention is to build worlds the viewer can come to and place their own story upon. My art investigates real world issues with science and technology but mixes them into fantastical worlds. To build these worlds I combine new technology with traditional materials. New technology is an interesting vehicle for storytelling because it is not archival. Our technology will not last forever. However it is integral to how we portray and imagine future society. My art augments traditional materials, the archival, with today’s technology, the ephemeral, which is important to my interest in combining reality and fantasy. I see traditional mediums as the reality of my artwork and the technology that extends from it as the fantasy of it. They can exist separately, but together they create a new story. By walking the line between reality and fantasy my art asks the viewer to question our reality and the direction of our future.
